Nepali Maoists Should bear Moral Responsibility for the Terror Attacks in Kathmandu

(Courtesy: La Verdad)

The government and the Maoists think the 5 bomb blasts in Kathmandu were intended to disrupt the CA elections. What a genius revelation!

An announcement of the obvious however, is little consolation for the families of the murdered and injured and even less assuring for a country gearing up for elections. In order to set the Nepali peoples’ minds at relative ease, the accusers must unambiguously identify the parties responsible for the bomb blasts and immediately bring them to justice. Making illusory allusions to “elements against constituent assembly elections” only leads to more confusion and fear.

The direction in which (Maoist) Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula and the Maoist leadership are pointing their fingers is easily inferred. For them, the ease with which blame is conveniently shifted on the “Royalists”, “regressive forces” and “status-quoists (both synonyms for groups/individuals sympathetic to some form of monarchy), continues. Just like the Madhesi movement was initially termed a “Royalist instigated uprising,” Maoist sympathizers continue the tradition of attributing any inexplicable phenomena under the general category of “Royalist instigation.”

However, what is not lost upon the Nepali population is that there is only one group in contemporary Nepalese history that is responsible for instilling the deplorable culture of violence and terror in the Nepali psyche. The only group that has consistently used violence as a means to achieve political gain is the Nepali Maoists. There exists no credible argument to refute this truth.

The Nepali people are not new to the application of terror in the pursuit of political goals. Specifically, bomb explosions were used throughout the decade-long insurgency to instill fear and uncertainty and to further the Maoists’ rise to power. The explosion of a bomb in Baluatar that killed a 16 year old boy, the targeted explosion that killed numerous civilians in Madi, and the innumerable explosions at government offices (throughout Nepal) were all carried out by the Maoists who today, are prominently represented in the interim parliament.

The heinous crime of targeting innocent people is inexcusable – no matter the circumstances. More to the point, such crimes are unjustifiable irrespective of the group that commits them. The height of hypocrisy is the Maoist leadership condemning the bombings in Kathmandu, while memories of innumerable, documented bombings by the Maoists, still ring fresh in the Nepali psyche.

Not once since the Maoists’ integration into the Nepali government has any Maoist uttered a word of remorse for the terror their decade-long insurgency wreaked on the Nepali populous. Not once has any Maoist leader apologized to the Nepali people for the deaths the Maoists are responsible for. Instead of a categorical renunciation of violence, Maoist cadre have emerged in the Nepali media proudly taking credit for the assassinations they were involved in. Even while the Maoist leadership equates the bomb blasts in Kathmandu with terrorism, Maoist cadre are busy terrorizing other party members who are attempting to campaign for the CA elections. A day after bomb blasts in Kathmandu, the YCL announced the launch of its “peoples’ action” campaign in three different districts.

This leads back to the million dollar question: “In whose best interest is it to ensure that the CA elections are not held?” If linkage between the bomb blasts and active Royalist elements can be established beyond a credible doubt, then do away with the institution immediately. The second amendment to the constitution provides the necessary legal impetus. If the same linkage can be established between the JTMM faction (that has vowed to disrupt CA elections), then go after them. But what if evidence emerges that links the bomb blasts to the only group that has publicly called for a postponement of CA elections? If evidence is brought forth of Maoist involvement in the bomb blasts, can Krishna Prasad Sitaula be trusted to bring the Maoists to justice? Absolutely not.

Insider reports from the recently held Maoist plenum state an overwhelming agreement within the Maoist rank and file, that CA elections in November will be a disaster to the Maoists. The Maoists know that the results of November elections will expose their pipe dreams, will discredit their revolution and will marginalize them to a political force that is a fraction of their current 83 seats in the interim parliament. The Maoists have a vested interest in transforming the current interim legislature into the constituent assembly, without going to the ballot box.

So while the Maoists and their ilk associate forces opposed to CA elections with the Royalists, it is clear that leaders like Arjun Narasingh KC and Ram Chandra Poudel do not share the Maoists’ view. Ram Chandra Poudel, a victim of Maoist humiliation himself, is certain to have a different perspective. Countless MPs and party cadre who have been physically assaulted by Maoist cadre on the campaign trail, understand what the 22 point Maoist demand implies in the villages and districts that they are finding, impossible to re-enter.

Where does this leave the Nepali people? It leaves them in the classic catch 22 situation the Maoists have thrived on since the very beginning of Nepal’s peace process – peace on the Maoists’ terms, and at the Maoists’ whim and fancy. To be sure, the Maoists are still a fully armed and operationally capable fighting force. UNMIN has been utterly ineffective in its verification of Maoist combatants (who regularly rotate in and out as YCL cadres depending on the situation) and the Nepali people are increasingly aware of this.

Baburam Bhattarai has repeatedly warned of the Maoists quitting the interim government which in lay man’s terms, means the dissolution of all previously signed agreements. This is precisely why, with overwhelming evidence of the Maoists’ already mobilized to disrupt the CA elections, no political party is able to challenge the Maoists and risk bearing the blame of a failed peace process.

Forget the RPP factions that have borne the brunt of Maoist aggression and consider the reports of even UML and NC cadre who are being systematically targeted by Maoists all over the country. Consider the Maoist suggestion that the YCL and the Maoist PLA (actually one in the same) be mobilized to provide “security” for the CA elections. This is a suggestion that the Maoists’ know, cannot be fulfilled. Put all these moving parts together and a picture of which group does not want CA elections comes into focus.

The Maoists are notorious for discrepancies in their words versus their actions. Everyone, including the international community, UNMIN, Indian authorities, and most important of all, the Nepali people are aware of this. It matters less whether or not the Maoists are directly involved in the bomb blasts in Kathmandu. They are already guilty for having instilled a culture of violence that others know, has yielded the Maoists’ power, political stature and international recognition.

Without a doubt, the acts of terror in Kathmandu will be leveraged by the Maoists to declare a republic before the CA elections. Such a campaign will be launched with or without credible evidence that links the bomb blasts back to Gyanendra. Just as certain is that even with the declaration of a republic, Maoist aggressions will not abate. To the contrary, such aggression is guaranteed to become more pronounced.

Before the Maoists go running their mouths again, the seven parties in the interim government should demand an unequivocal apology from the Maoists for a decade of violence and terror. This should be followed by a public declaration from the Maoists that affirms their commitment to non-violent politics. At a minimum, the Maoists’ owe this commitment to the Nepali people who continue to suffer the brunt of Maoist orchestrated terror, stemming from the Maoist-waged, civil war.

Nothing in Nepali politics has any meaning till the Nepali people are assured that violence does not pay. This assurance must be initiated by the perpetrators of the most violent period in memorable Nepalese history.

I totally agree with the view that the Maoists should bear the moral responsibility for the bomb blasts in Kathmandu. Infact, I am sure that they are the ones responsible for the bomb blasts.

Anonymous said...

There is not a single drop of doubt in any Kathmandu resident's minds who is capable of committing such crimes. The writer asks a very important question - if the crimes are linked to the Maoists can that Bahun-baad Shitoula prosecute the Maoists?

Or will everyone use this as an excuse to get rid of the King... and still have bomb blasts long after Nepal is declared a republic?

This anarchy must be dealt with sternly.

Everyone knows that this is the handiwork of the maoists. But to ask them to apologise and show remorse has no meaning. They may even do it with empty words but still have murderous heart inside. Once you have committed one murder then there is no more humanity left in you. When they have committed tens of thousands of murder then how can we expect them to behave properly.

The only way out is for them to be found guilty and punished either politically or in court. They are responsible for the cruel death of tens of thousands of Nepalis and they must pay for it soon. Apologists for the maoist like Padma Ratna Tuladhar should also be made to pay for such murder and the destruction of Nepal as a state.

What with the Yechury Parliament taking control over everything without being elected it is naive to expect Nepali politicians and Nepali state to punish the Maoists.

Perhaps Nepalis deserve this fate. How stupid we were to quietly accept the Yechury Parliament and all its shenanigans. How stupid we were to accept the likes of Girija, Sitaula, Nemwang, Madhav Nepal et al. If we are stupid then we are destined to suffer for a long time.

Yes, people are presuming that it is the grand design of maoist and Mr. Sitaula for the bomb blast.

Anonymous said...

And Mr. Sitaula punishing the maoist. Is it a joke ? Do we have law and order in this country. Yes only for their opponents not for them.

Prachanda seems to have lost his mind...He sounds like a mad man whenever he opens his mouth to speak...And it seems to me that he is doing a lot of talking and nothing else...First, he wanted the CA polls to decide the faith of the Monarchy...He seemed pretty sure that the Nepali people will go for the Republican set up...And I am pretty sure that he thought he was going to be the First President of Nepal...Hahaha...And then, he wanted to put off the CA polls...Saying that they haven't fulfilled their promises that were made to the Nepali people...Oh, What a shocker! And now, he is saying that it is impossible to take part in the CA polls before the announcement of Republic...I wonder what his next demand is going to be...Maybe, he is going to nominate himself as the First President of Nepal without going to the polls...Maybe he is hoping that his name will go down in history as the Greatest Terrorist who later on became the First Presedent of Nepal...

I JUST WANT TO TELL PRACHANDA AKA MR. DAHAL THAT THE FATE OF THE MONARCHY DOES NOT LIE IN HIS HANDS OR IN THE HANDS OF HIS PARTY WHICH IS NOTHING BUT A TERRORIST ORGANIZATION. WHO THE HELL DOES HE THINK HE IS? THE NEPALI PEOPLE HAVE THE SOLE RIGHT TO DECIDE WHETHER THEY WANT THEIR KING OR NOT. AND THEY WILL DECIDE WHAT THEY WANT IN THE CA ELECTIONS ON 22ND NOVEMNER 2007.

Not only the maoists but their friends of spa leaders should take the responsibility of the present terror situation. The day will come, the people will ask and punish for their misdeeds and supporting it.The cases are already seen in Afghanistan, Iraq etc. countries. They are the one, specially Mr. Girija and Sitaula, who is pushing for the terror acts to lengthen and enjoy their tenures. The cases of terror in Kathmandu, terror in Lahan, terror in Nepalganj are the examples of supporting it. Mr. Girija and Sitaula are responsible for bringing terror in terai and killing 42 peoples and injuring 800 madhesi. Because of their acts, the country is already divided ideologically. To built this nation, our forfathers had given their life and these filthy leaders are destroying it.

Now people started to doubt about the grand design of this terror blast. How long this kind of democracy works and for whom ?

Anonymous said...

When will this day come? Are you going to make it come? Are you going to "punish" the SPA for its misdeeds? Are you going to seek justice for the boy who was killed in Lahan? For the Maoist who were slaughtered in Gaur?

If so, tell us what you plan to do. If not, shut your mouth and stop your whining.

Anonymous said...

Shit-owla hides his incompetence by accusing King of hataching the bomb blast- Girja surrenders to Maoist and is in agreeable mood to allow Maoist to supervise the Election and integrate them in the Army. And in between Maoist blow up innocent people and non of SPA take any responsibility or show remorse except talk about their proposed holy grail and how it is under attack- So I presume loss of life is nothing but a small price we must pay for these leaders to ride on us as it is clear now we are expendable.

Nepal shuts down when a political leader is slighted or manhandled but poor school girl was forced to die young not for the fault of hers but for political gain which does not value life but position and title that no bearing or rational.

I guess to live in Nepal, there is no other option but be forced to join a union, political party or even outfit like YCL. All the degenerate tendencies are virtue now.

I curse you Girja, Shit-owla and all the members of gang of 8 who have made us all sacrificial lamb.

There are a lot of unhappy people on this comments section and I am one of them.

The way our country is heading is completely illogical. It is not democracy, it is not liberal and it is certainly not progressive. Maoism is not progressive. Royalism is not progressive. Bahunism is not progresive.

The time for chatting is coming to an end once more. It's coming time to fight back and stand for what we believe in.

Rid Nepal of the Royalists, the Maoists and the Bahunists in that order and we will all be better off.

Anonymous said...

I am a Royalist...I believe that the Monarchy should not be abolished...So, how do you plan to get rid of someone like me?

Anonymous said...

Stop right there.

Are you a Royalist as in someone who beleives in the uesfulness of the institution or are you a Royalist who believes Gyane and only Gyane is the solution?

If the first, I believe space can be created for you. If the second, I'm afraid you will rid yourself with no help from anyone else.

To Girija Bahun,
I admire HM King Gyanendra...I trully believe that he wants the best for his country and his people...I can understand why he had to sack Deuba's government...It was because Deuba couldn't keep his promise...But, it is very hard to expect the international community to support the King for his actions...Anyway, whats done is done and cannot be undone...So to answer your question, yes I am a Royalist who believes that the Monarchy should not be abolished and also someone who admires HM King Gyanendra...Oh by the way, I belong to the warrior class, the Chettris...We know how to fight and can take care of ourselves...Thank You Very Much.

If writing to this blog would impact policy, there would be volumes to author. But it doesn’t, so all this is, is a social networking forum wherere people come together and compete based on their thoughts/ideas.

Let the monarchy be abolished quickly and the CA elections happen on time and we’ll see how loud the voice of Maoist apologists will be. Better still, let the Maoists give up their arms and we’ll see how well the Nepali people treat the Maoists.

The day of reckoning for the Maoists is coming. Wheter it is before or after the Royalists are destroyed it irreleveant. The fact that the Maoists too will face their own music is all that counts.

Anonymous said...

Ok Gyane Lover,

I'll give you credit for speaking your mind.

You are asking for a mutually exclusive outcome. Gyane, Paras and the institution of monarchy cannot co-exist.

Let me not even get started on Deuba and Gyane and all the options Gyane had and blah blah blah...

Chhetri.... hahaa. The laughing stock of the entier country. Good luck with your warrior skills in the 21st century. Too short to be of use in a real army and too stupid to be useful in politics.

Anonymous said...

The laughing stock of the entire country?
Are you sure? Have you asked the entire population of the country? I don't think so. So, why make such comments which can only be termed as stupid not to mention racist?
And for your information, there are thousands of Chettris in the army who are ready to fight and die for their country.
One more thing, did you just say that the Chettris are too stupid to be in politics?
I can think of Surya Bahadur Thapa, Kamal Thapa, Pashupati SJB Rana, Lokendra Bahadur Chand, to name a few...Are they all stupid? I don't think so. And is it a crime to be stupid?

Anonymous said...

Um... just read the names you referenced as Chhetri politicians and you can answer your own question. Are they stupid or not? Haha.

In politics, it is a crime to be stupid and in office.

Are you able to confirm that the whole country isn't laughing at chhetris? No. But can you at least get a sense of how hard the Bahuns are laughing at your clan? Yes. So there you go.

There are Magars, Gurungs, Bahuns, Tamangs and Limbus in the army too. Who are these people going to fight on behalf of Nepal, when and exactly how?

I can tell you are a Chhetri. Your logic (or lack of) makes this clear to me.

Anonymous said...

I think we have gone off track. Whether the Chettris are a laughing stock or not can be discussed some other time. I am not racist so I don't want to defend my race and insult someone else's race. I don't want to go after someone based on his or her race. I don't like Prachanda not because he is a Bahun. Its because he is responsible for the death of 13,000 innocent men, women and children of this country. Get the picture?
For now, I would like to stick to the debate of the Maoists versus the Monarchy. If its alright with you.

Anonymous said...

That's fine by me.

Just don't start a "discussion" you can't win and then cry like a baby after you get whipped.

Monarchy versus Maoists it is... what intelligent, substantive thoughts do you have on your mind? Please do share with this forum.

And, use a "name" so anyone interested can follow.

Anonymous said...

To Girija Bahun,

I am not here to win or to score points...I just want to post my thoughts...Thats what ''Post A Comment' means, doesn't it?
And I don't know if my thoughts are intelligent or substantive according to your standardsI don't care about that...What is your standard anyway? And who sets these standards in the first place?...There is no need to answer the last two questions because franky I can't be bothered with the answers...
All I want to do is post my thoughts and let the writer(s) of these articles know what their readers think about their work...

Anonymous said...

According to me, a person who asks questions that they don't want answers to is a STUPID person.

You want to advocate for Gyane. That's fine. Do it.

And I wanted to tell you that your king is not my king. And that's fine too and I've done exactly that.

In the process, you mentioned your caste so I mentioned mine and you demonstrated all on your own how silly your logic is.

I standby constitutional Monarchy and multiparty system. I whole heartedly believe if there is no monarchy in Nepal then, we are no different from Sikkim. It means our national Identity and heritage. I ain't a flotsam to drift, I have got my views and I am not pretending to be what I am not, a COMMUNIST and SPA (who are willing sale this country to likes of Yechri and India). What I see is lots of pretending going on, people putting on a mask to hide their real intent. Say yes if you are for Monarchy and Multiparty system or say yes if you are for SPA and Maoist but do not sit in the fence and argue for argument's sake.

The burden is on us to move ahead with best interest of a nation rather than name calling and tit for tat comments that borders on being insane. And the burden of proof is that we must demonstrate that we can self govern,be self reliant, self disciplined, and self motivated- not by lecherous Yechuir, India, US or commie called Maoist or disjointed, delusional SPA. I speaking of new platform and new vision- lets start on this road.

Who is against the CA elections?

In order to answer that question, we have to ask ourselves another question. Who is going to loose if the CA elections did take place in time? And in the present context, it is the Maoists who are going to loose if they take part in the CA elections. Why? Because they know that the people will not vote for them. So, they want to postpone the CA elections by coming up with their demands. The Maoists were never serious about the CA elections, they are not serious about the CA elections and they will never be serious about the CA elections. Their party leaders are just giving lip service to the Nepali people and the seven political parties by saying that they are ready for the CA elections when clearly they are not. If they are ready then why do they want to postpone it? Why are they threatening to walk out of the government if it doesn't declare a Republic before 18th September? This is all because they are afraid to loose. They are afraid to face the truth that the Nepali people are not ready for a Republic. The Maoists have to come to terms with this fact and move on. PLEASE MOVE ON. There are far more important things than the fate of the Monarchy. Why don't they shift their attention towards poverty alleviation, sustainable developemnt, women's empowerment, to name a few? There are so many things that need to be addressed.

Anonymous said...

One Maoist monkey has threatened to walk out of the government by September 18.

Another Maoist monkey has said that there are "serious conspiracies being hatched" to derail the CA elections and so they can't be held (the most serious has just been hatched by the Maoist monkies themselves).

Another Maoist monkey is saying that without a republic elections can't be held.

All the monkeys are saying the Maoists are for elections.

Who do they think they're fooling except other, already brainwashed monkeys?

Girija bahun,

neither you bahun will get the vote from chhettris nor from other ethnic groups...you bahuns are gone case in Nepal...since 10,000 years, the bahuns are misleading the Nepal by making king to "Vishnu ko Avtar" for vested interest to put them in status as top caste of all... chhettri and ethnic groups just understood the bahunist tricks now...bahuns just became as "PUJARI" in the time of unification and saved their life. They have no contribution in making this country. Now bahuns found everything safe and sound, they are coming to rule solely bypassing all in the name of democracy. The bahuns are used to with doing "SRADHHA" and begging in the name of god is their habits. That is why ruling brahmins don't ashamed to make this country beggars...that is why we became beggars in international level... we chhettri (16% population) with other ethnic groups (72%)are going to join hands and we know how to sidelined the bahuns in CA election ......

http://www.kantipuronline.com/kolnews.php?&nid=121694

The writer of this article on what the Maoists are going to say is 100% on target.

I can't wait to hear the evidence the Maoists have against the King. I sure hope it's better than the CDs they distributed when they said Royalists are trying to assassinate Americans! haha

Anonymous said...

Good to know that the NC is rooting for a Republic. Now all those supporters of NC who want a constitutional monarchy can dump Girija Baje's party and join the RPP-Nepal. Not bad for the Royalists, eh? Now, NC can fight with the CPN-Maoists and the UML for the remaining votes. It will be very interesting to see these three good for nothing parties going after each other.

Yesterday's headline:

Maoists will be out of govt by Sept 18 if republic is not announced, says Ananta

Wow. And I thought I would never live long enough to see this day. The Maoists are going to leave the government by 18th September. So, they will go back to jungle. Excellent! And then, the PM can send the army after them and finish them off for good or the army can put all the politicians in jail and go after the Maoists and finish them off for good. Either way its all good.

1. The Maoists will never bear moral responsibility for anything or apologize to anyone.
2. The dialogue above between the bahun and the chetri manifests clearly what is wrong with Nepal today.
3. It is high time for the Silent Majority to express itself and say "enough is enough" to terrorism, corruption, lack of vision and leadership and plain mismanagement.

According to the Census of 1991, 37.1% of the total polulation consists of Bahuns, Chettris and Newars. That means 62.9% of the total population consists of Janajatis and Ethnic Communities. If the government decides to go for proportional representation then the Bahuns, Chettris and Newars will be the new minority groups.

Yes. Just one comment.

In a world where the tyranny of the minority overwhelms the rule of the majority, I welcome Bahuns and Chhetris being minorities.

Anonymous said...

Anon 8:25, the Maoists "have to bear the moral responsibility...". Yes they have to, but they won't. That's my point. There's a big gap between what "should be" and "what is".

Anonymous said...

Simply put, if Maoists are to exclusively bear the 'moral responsibility' for every kind of violence that perpetuates in Nepal, you - Mr. La Verdad, should also keep in mind that whatever 'changes' that develop in Nepal should also be credited to Maoists exclusively.

In essence, if the people are unable to take their stand against the Maoist's (or government’s) unilateral declaration of secularism, republicanism, federalism or what other kinds of isms that may proliferate Nepal, then it is useless to simply sit in a corner and throw stones while Maoists go on a rampage and create a new Nepal in their own image.

Where is the resistance? Why did the people not protest the secularization of Nepal? Why are they not raising their voices against 8-party's attempt to declare Nepal a federal republic before CA election or without any public referendums?

Rest of the Nepalis need to learn not from the Maoists but from the Madhesis. You need to fight for what you believe in; what is inherently yours - history, culture, religion etc. before a handful politicos and 'intellectual elites' re-shape your future once and for all.

However, lacking such public outrage and resistance only leads me to one conclusion: either that Nepali populace is extremely fatalistic and lazy that they don't really care what happens to their country, or that they are ok with all those changes that have taken place or will take place in the future.

Anonymous said...

Spoken like a true "mao" indeed.

What a twisted logic to justify the Maoist violence. If that were true, then should we also thank Gyanendra for making the condition to create the 7 pary alliance? They definitely weren't getting along before Gyane came along. Did the Nepali people thank Gyanendra for their chance at peace?

And in the same way, the Nepali people aren't opposing any of the things you are written about - why? Because it does not affect them directly.

When a bomb explodes and 3 children die, it affects everyone. Before the Maoists started exploding bombs all over Nepal, such things did not used to happen.

So should we thank the Maoists for the change in way how Nepali people are looking to get their political demands?

Thank god we don't have to thank the MJF for following the Maoist model.

But un-link your logic from the republic, secular and royal arguments and see how much sense it makes to thank the Maoists for the culture of violent politics they have started in Nepal. Nepali people are not ok with this. Difference is, when they oppose the Maoitss, they are killed. That's what this all comes down to.

Like in Afghanistan and other countries, the people of Nepal will remember the monarchy in the future if it is decided to abolish. These, NC and UML, so-called democratic but in actual autocratic rulers of tdoay are the slave of the maoist. Their say in the politics will be nothing in very near future. Neither they would have any public nor security forces in their sides during the maoist rule. Those who make loud voices will be inside the prison and expcet some one to be there to save them, and remember the things mentioned by BP Koirala. To get rid of the maoist rule in Nepal, the terai people will block the hill. India will support them in this context. This country will become killing fields due to communism and anti-communism conflicts and ethnic wars. India will support the ethnic groups to abolish the maoist. Either the terai will become different state or they will rule whole Nepal after cleaning the maoist. The President of Nepal will be some Yadav or Sharma from Bihar. The hilly people will be ruled by bihari not even the actual current madhesi of Nepal. Our status will be second grade citizen like in Darjeeling. Our current leaders like Gagan Thapa will go to the door of some bihari with the expectation to include in their parties to contest some remote hill area. The real madhesi like tharus and current madhesi of Nepal will also be marginalised due to huge influx of people from Indian border. Till that time Girija will be already dead and his daughter Sujata will screamed with her collegues bahuns like Mahesh Acharya, Narhari Acharya etc. for not listening her in the past. During that time, Sekhar Koirala might be happily stay in Delhi and Mr. Sitaula spend rest of his life with illegal earnings. Mr. Madhav Kumar Nepal will take shelter in mad house due to regrets. And Mr. Bam Dev Gautam will walk in the street by splitting himself remembering the past. Mr. Prachanda and Baburam will already be killed by ethnic groups. Hisial Yami will open the halwai shop in Ason. Mr. Pradip Nepal will be the headmaster of his own school teaching them new national anthem originated from indian dominated madhesh. Mr. Pradip Giri will not stop giving his useless speech but might more emphasis toward Mahatma Gandhi. Our commander-in-chief will be some like Lakhan Yadav and we pahadia people will be no more than colonial ranks. Our so-called human right activists and civil society peoples will be seen in Baneswor chowk just reading the newspaper. Most of the professionals will leave the country and Indian professionals replace them. The Indian Embassy will be shifted to some big durbar. During that time, the people will remember the monarchy and regrets the past for their misdeeds. These brahmins who are taking the raw money today will again start doing SHRADHA of Marwari...

I disagree that Maoist should take the responsibility for terror attack- God damn Shit-owla should take the blame whereas perpetrator seldom come forward and say -"I did it." Its a plan hatched by two bull brothers (Puspa and Shit-owla) in order to railroad Monarchy by placing blame- this did not fly, thank god. Plan agreed by India and Maoist was to create scare by terror and tie it up with the palace whereby they (Girja Bhaun) can call immediate assembly and then declare Republic. Its similar to Hilter tactics against Kaiser.

Bhauns have all the good traits but assuming themselves to be "more equal than the rest" is their folly which will cascade into aparthied because of their own making. And no telling what will happen- may be Bramha Pap will be just a another murder of hate- who knows.

As this nation starts inward looking and finds flaws within- the ramification of such action has multiple effects- it can blowup and totally disintegrate or have a slow death where each every community and individual turn into each other- sembalce of a society or a nation is eroded where by foreign power will justify the overt action to neo colonize. This is happening in Nepal- rather than Nepali charting our course, its the India Ambassdors and leaders proposing, writing new consitution, and guiding in shape & form what we should be- alas gang of 8- readily accepts as they have burned the bridge that can make Nepal for Nepali, by Nepali and from Nepali.

C'mon, "aachi-khao" is not trying to justify Maoist violence. He/she is simply and correctly bemoaning the complacence of the general Nepali public - the Silent Majority, shall we say. I support his views. When will enough be enough? When will the Silent Majority take to the streets to give the current oligarchic dictators a taste of their own "agitation" medicine? The only thing to fear is 'fear' itself!

Anon 2AM looks like my previous comment- as I standby it, I welcome anyone who see thru the same lens.

The centrifugal forces like we have seen from Terai to now Himalaya will finally tear this nation to shreds and blades that will do the job will be gang of 8 with varied degree of contribution instigated by India to do a hatchet job.

People do not seem to learn even from the not too distant history and aftermath of foreign instigated regime change which has no bearing to the host nation. Like a sheep with intelligence to insult people propose and propound logic that will not withstand test of time or the will of a people who since its inception by virtuous King has not yet seen even religious acrimony but now the Pandora box has been opened that has taken color of communal, regional and even religious strife. Is this what you call political expediency at the cost of a nation.

If you have ideas to spare - use it with caution not develop herd mentality to justify and accept in full without understanding it- if you do you are no better than the one who believes in superstitions.

Puran, I agree with you that ""aachi-khao" probably isn't trying to voice in favor of the Maoits.

But you have to admit, the Anonymous reponse to "aachi-khao" posting is also right on target. Maoists do exploit such conflicting sentiments to their benefit.

So you refer to the "silent majority." What do you think it will take for this majoirty to revolt? Or will this majority forever be silenced by the threat of Maoist violence, bahunist nepotism and royalist divinity?

Anonymous said...

Well taken points, Hikmat. What will it take to move the Silent Majority to action? Leadership. Not the out-dated political leadership currently available but a dynamic nationalistic incorruptible one - unfazed by Maoists, bahunists or anachronistic concepts of divinity. The Silent Majority will coalesce behind this kind of leadership and then there's no stopping the real "New Nepal". Any takers?

“Spoken like a true "mao" indeed.”

-Surely, but watch what I do to your flawed and contradicting logic instead.

"If that were true, then should we also thank Gyanendra for making the condition to create the 7 pary alliance? They definitely weren't getting along before Gyane came along. Did the Nepali people thank Gyanendra for their chance at peace?"

-Maos, and the SPAs, have openly credited and accepted King Gs (supposedly undemocratic) move in helping form a strategic partnership against G initially. You must be blind or logically impaired not to see the connection. However, the fire has now escalated into forming a strategic partnership against monarchy altogether. So yes, in some round about way, King G did manage to give a much needed reason for the parties to form alliance.

People need not thank King G personally, but the 8 party alliances have already "thanked" the series of events leading up to their rise.

You say:

"...the Nepali people aren't opposing any of the things you are written about - why? Because it does not affect them directly."

then you go on to say,

"When a bomb explodes and 3 children die, it affects everyone."

-May be it's just me but I see the above two sets as contradicting. If any event doesn't affect one directly, how does it then affect the whole - everybody? If any social, political or economic event that transpires in Nepal doesn't affect Nepalis directly then how does blowing up bombs in response or in reaction to those social, political and economic events lead to some reaction as we are seeing in this blog and elsewhere?

"Before the Maoists started exploding bombs all over Nepal, such things did not used to happen."

-But then you do not seem to accept that Maos blowing bombs were in response to something that affected people directly in the first place. Please clarify....

"So should we thank the Maoists for the change in way how Nepali people are looking to get their political demands?"

-How are the people demanding their rights? Certainly not begging from the superiors as before. You make it sound as if Nepalis were/are pure-bred population without an iota of violence hidden in their psyche. However, the whole theory of martial races the Brits have exploited assumes otherwise. Damn man, we are world renowned for being violent. Without violence there is no valor, and damn Gurkhas are a valorous bunch. Hence Nepalis are as violent as any other ethnic or geographic group which may actually have benefited Mao styled revo and made it successful to an extent. We need to shed the illusion of peace-loving Buddha-ko-desh-ko blah blah and pick up guns to defend our interests if it really comes to that.

"But un-link your logic from the republic, secular and royal arguments and see how much sense it makes to thank the Maoists for the culture of violent politics they have started in Nepal. Nepali people are not ok with this."

Shall I un-link my argument from the premise of my argument altogether? That's like saying, 'imagine if there were no Maos, how happy Nepalis would be'. True. But the fact of the matter is Maos are out there and Nepalis are miserable. Similarly, Maos rise to power cannot be seen independent of Moa's rhetoric - republicanism, secularization, federalism along ethnic lines etc., which is beginning to materialize in Nepal.

"Difference is, when they oppose the Maoitss, they are killed. That's what this all comes down to."

This is probably the only logically consistent argument you have made. Agreed!

Why do we even bother talking about a ''free and fair CA election'' when deep inside our hearts we know that there is not going to be a ''free and fair CA election''? And it looks like there is not going to be any CA election free or unfree, fair or unfair. So, why don't we stop complaining to each other, blaming the Maoists for everything and just stop wasting our time? The Maoists are running the show now. And they don't give a shit to what we do or say. Its complete bollocks. We are being duped. And the sad part is that we know we are being duped. Yet, we don't do anything except bitch about them. I am afraid that our bitching doesn't mean shit to anyone least of all to the Maoists. The good thing about Bitching is that we can express our frustration and anger by speaking about it verbally. But, Thats it. Nothing else. So, lets prepare ourselves to suffer for the rest of our lives at the hands of the Maoists.

Here is to people like us who don't have the balls to stand up and fight. All we do is sit in our homes, read the papers, watch the news, come online at nepalnews.com and post our comments and then bitch about the Maoists. I say we deserve to be ruled by these Maoists. We have dug our own grave and we must now lie in it.

And if we don't like being ruled by the Maoists then why don't we do something about it instead of just bitching about them all the time? Why don't we organize a group of like minded people and protest against the Maoists? Words can be a powerful weapon if used wisely. But, there is no denying the fact that actions speak louder than words. So, lets speak out. Lets stand up and fight for our rights, our beliefs, our freedom. Cause no one is going to fight for us. We have to fight for ourselves.

The Maoists stood up and fought for what they believed in. They were not afraid to fight for their beliefs. They had the courage to stand up and fight against an army which was far more superior to them. And, look at them now. They are running the show. They are making the so called corrupt-visionless-stupid-blind-idiot politicians dance according to their tunes. And if we don't stand up and fight then they will make us dance according to their tunes.

And the Maoists are dancing according to the tunes of RIM and CCOMPOSA

The Maoists have been in the government for a while now and I was wondering what have they accomplished so far?
Babu Ram had presented Deuba who was the PM suring that period with a 40 point demand in 1996.
So, I was wondering if Babu Ram and Prachanda have managed to accomplish any of the 40 point demands that they put forward.
1) Regarding the 1950 Treaty between India and Nepal, all unequal stipulations and agreements should be removed.
2) HMG should admit that the anti-nationalist Tanakpur agreement was wrong, and the Mahakali Treaty, incorporating it, should be nullified.
3) The entire Nepal-India border should be controlled and systematized. Cars with Indian number plates, plying the roads of Nepal, should not be allowed.
4) Gurkha recruiting centers should be closed and decent jobs should be arranged for the recruits.
5) In several areas of Nepal, where foreign technicians are given precedence over Nepalese technicians for certain jobs, a system of work permits should be instituted for the foreigners.
6) The monopoly of foreign capital in Nepal's industry, trade and economic sector should be stopped.
7) Sufficient income should be generating from customs duties for the country's economic development.
8) The cultural pollution of imperialists and expansionists should be stopped. Hindi video, cinema, and all kinds of such newspapers and magazines should be completely stopped. Inside Nepal, import and distribution of vulgar Hindi films, videocassettes and magazines should be stopped.
9) Regarding NGOs and INGOs. Bribing by imperialists and expansionists in the name of NGOs and INGOs should be stopped.
10) A new constitution has to be drafted by the people's elected representatives.
11) All the special rights and privileges of the King and his family should be ended.
12) Army, police and the administration should be under the people's control.
13) The Security Act and all other repressive acts should be abolished.
14) All the false charges against the people of Rukkum, Rolpa, Jajarkot, Gorkha, Kavre, Sindhupalchowk, Sindhuli, Dhanusha and Ramechhap should be withdrawn and all the people falsely charged should be released.
15) Armed police operations in the different districts should immediately be stopped.
16) Regarding Dilip Chowdhary, Bhuvan Thapa Magar, Pravakar Subedi and other people who disappeared from police custody at different times, the government should constitute a special investigating committee to look into these crimes and the culprits should be punished and appropriate compensation given to their families.
17) People, who died during the time of the movement, should be declared as martyrs and their families, and those who have been wounded and disabled should be given proper compensation. Strong actions should be taken against the killers.
18) Nepal should be declared a secular state.
19) Girls should be given equal property rights to those of their brothers.
20) All kinds of exploitation and prejudice based on caste should be ended. In areas having a majority of one ethnic group, the group should have autonomy over that area.
21) The status of Dalits as untouchables should be ended and the system of untouchability should be ended once and for all.
22) All languages should be given equal status. Up until middle-high school level, arrangements should be made for education to be given in the children's mother tongue.
23) There should be guarantee of free speech and free press. The communication media should be completely autonomous.
24) Intellectuals, historians, artists and academicians engaged in other cultural activities should be guaranteed intellectual freedom.
25) In both the Terai and hilly regions there is prejudice and misunderstanding in backward areas. This should be ended and the backward areas should be assisted. Good relations should be established between the villages and the city.
26) Decentralization in real terms should be applied to local areas, which should have local rights, autonomy and control over their own resources.
27) The tiller should have right to the soil he/she tills. The land of rich landlords should be confiscated and distributed to the homeless and others who have no land.
28) Brokers and commission agents should have their property confiscated and that money should be invested in industry.
29) All should be guaranteed work and should be given stipend until jobs are found for them.
30) HMG should pass strong laws ensuring that people involved in industry and agriculture should receive minimum wages.
31) The homeless should be given suitable accommodation. Until HMG can provide such accommodation they should not be removed from where they are squatting.
32) Poor farmer should be completely freed from debt. Loans from the Agricultural Development Bank by poor farmers should be completely written off. Small industries should be given loans.
33) Fertilizers and seeds should be easily and cheaply available, and the farmer should be given a proper market price for their production.
34) Flood and drought victims should be given all necessary help.
35) All should be given free and scientific medical service & education and education for profit (Private Schools?) should be completely stopped.
36) Inflation should be controlled and laborers' salaries should be raised in direct ratio with the rise in prices. Daily essential goods should be made cheap and easily available.
37) Arrangement should be made for drinking water, good roads and electricity in the villages.
38) Cottage and other small industries should be granted special facilities and protection.
39) Corruption, black marketeering, smuggling, bribing, the taking of commission, etc., should all be stopped.
40) Orphans, the disabled, the elderly and the children should be given help and protection.

Have the Maoists managed to fulfill of these demands? They had submitted these demands to Deuba on 4th Feb. 1996 and the stipulated deadline to fulfill all of these 40 demands was 17th Feb 1996. Just two weeks! And then on 13th Feb. 1996, they announced the People's War because the government had failed to fulfill their demands. Now, the shoe is on the other foot. So, Prachanda ji and Babu Ram ji, have you any plans to fulfill your own demands? Or have you forgotten all about it since you guys are now in the government?
